Scholarships and bursaries are made to students currently or potentially involved in the academic programs of the College. Residence requirements are dependent on the individual scholarship.

Peace and Conflict Studies Program

William Dick PACS Field Study Award
This award of $2,000 supports and promotes the PACS Field Study program among students at CGUC and those pursuing studies at UW. Financial support for students will also aid the work of the agencies for which they volunteer. Recipients will be chosen using the following criteria:

  • Students pursuing a PACS concentration
  • Students accepted for PACS Field Study program and placement with an NGO that does not provide adequate funding
  • Students holding at least an upcoming one term residence contract at the College, with consideration given to students who have had at least 2 previous terms in residence, may be given priority
  • Students with financial need, may be given priority

Becky Frey Student Scholarship
In memory of Becky Frey, a Grebel student who died of cancer in 1996, a scholarship of approximately $1,000 will be awarded to a second or third-year student enrolled in the Peace and Conflict Studies program. The scholarship will be based on a combination of scholastic ability and financial need.

 

Global Conflict Management and Transformation Award

This award supports and promotes the training of community leaders from areas of conflict around the world in theories and practical methods of conflict management and transformation. Funds will be used to offset costs of education for students from areas of conflict while they are enrolled in Peace and Conflict Studies (PACS) courses or Conflict Management Certificate courses at Conrad Grebel University College.  


Recipients will be chosen with  the following criteria: 

  • Students originating from an area of conflict;

  • Students who are giving leadership or have potential to provide leadership in the area of conflict management and transformation in their home community;

  • Students  enrolled in a PACS course (either as undergraduate, graduate or in the IPACS Conflict Management Certificate program).

Letters of interest should be addressed to the Director of the Peace and Conflict Studies at Conrad Grebel University College prior to March 31. The award will typically be approximately $5000.

 

Mary and Walter Hougham PACS Award

This award was established to provide financial support for students studying PACS at Conrad Grebel University College who have demonstrated financial need.
This award is given to:
• Students enrolled in the PACS program at Grebel
• Students who qualify for OSAP funding
• Students who demonstrate involvement in and commitment to the PACS program

 

The Vic and Rita Krueger Family PACS Award
This award supports first-year students intending to major in PACS, who qualify for OSAP and demonstrate a commitment to the ideals of the PACS program. Recipients will be chosen giving preference to the following criteria:

• Students enrolled in a PACS core course
• Students intending to pursue a PACS major
• Students who qualify for OSAP funding
• Students who demonstrate a commitment to the ideals of the PACS program (through a letter of application that outlines personal experience in peace issues, study goals and long term career aspirations).

Two awards of approximately $1,000 will be awarded annually. (50% in the student's first year and the remainder in their second year when PACS is declared as a major)

MCC Peace Award/PACS Internships
These awards are available to students pursuing a PACS plan who have been accepted to a Field Studies course.

 

Elliot C. McLoughry Fund Scholarship

Recipients of this award must be PACS students who are making outstanding contributions to the PACS program through scholarly achievement in courses or research, and/or leadership in student peace organizations.

 

Peter C. and Elisabeth Williams Memorial Fund Scholarship
Annual scholarships from these funds are awarded to students in the PACS program at Conrad Grebel University College who promote peace and peaceful relations between people and nations. Recipients must be students who are making outstanding contributions to the PACS program through scholarly achievement in courses or field work. Nominations are normally made by members of the PACS faculty. Awards are approximately $400.

 

Lina Wohlgemut Award
This award offers assistance to PACS students from the developing world, students interested in service in the developing world or students interested in service within the context of the church. An annual award of approximately $600 is normally awarded.

Music Department

The Jean Caya Music Award
This award supports and promotes musical gifts among students studying at CGUC and pursuing Music studies at UW. Recipients will be chosen giving preference to the following criteria:
• Students pursuing a Music Major or Joint Honours
• Students enrolled in a music course at Conrad Grebel University College
• Demonstrated musical and academic ability (instrumental, vocal, research)
• Contribution to the music program of the College.

Two awards of approximately $1,200 will be given annually for two years to the successful applicants.

Rudolf and Hedwig Rempel Music Award
The Award supports and promotes musical gifts among students studying at Conrad Grebel University College and pursuing Music studies at the University of Waterloo. The award will be used to attract gifted students into the Arts Faculty (first year) and acceptance into the Music Program (in the second year). Normally a student will receive 25% of the award in each of their four years of study. Recipients will be chosen giving preference to the following criteria:

  • Students who are pursuing a Music Major or Joint Honours.
  • Students enrolled in music at Conrad Grebel University College and holding a 75% average.
  • Contribution to the Music program of the College.
  • Students holding a current contract as a resident or associate student with the College.

The Chair of the Music Department will recommend nominee(s) from those who submit letters of interest. Two awards of $2,000 per year for 4 years will be given.

Clemens Scholarships in Music
Each year, these scholarships are given to general and honours music majors or to joint honours music majors who are entering or continuing studies towards a degree in music. The following criteria for scholarships will be considered: academic excellence, achievement in performance (Music Studio course), and overall contribution to the music program (participation in Grebel-organized ensembles, recitals or chamber music). At least two music courses per term are required for recipients of music scholarships. Nominations are normally made by the members of the Music faculty.

Agnes Giesbrecht Choral Music Scholarship
This award of approximately $1,000 supports and promotes choral music and training among students enrolled in the Music Program at Conrad Grebel. The applicant will have a strong academic record, be actively involved in the Music Program, possess excellent vocal skills, and demonstrate a keen interest in choral music, including the Russian Mennonite choral music tradition. The recipient will be a member of the Chapel Choir and will serve as assistant to the Director of the Chapel Choir.

Anabaptist/Mennonite Studies

J. William and Sarah Dyck Scholarship for Russian-Mennonite Studies
This annual scholarship of at least $500 will be awarded to a student who is either enrolled in the Diploma of Mennonite Studies Program at Grebel or has produced a publishable research paper about the Russian-Mennonite experience from the beginning of World War I to the end of the Soviet Period. The subject of the paper may be chosen from a variety of disciplines, e.g. Religion, Music, Education, History, Literature, etc.

The Karin Packull Anabaptist Studies Award
This award of approximately $1000 supports and promotes Anabaptist studies among students at Conrad Grebel and/or the University of Waterloo. Preference will be given to:
• Students enrolled in undergraduate or graduate studies at Grebel (grad students in History at UW or in the MTS program at Grebel)
• Students who qualify for OSOTF funding through the Ontario Student Assistance program
• Students enrolled in a course that deals with Anabaptist studies generally, but with priority given to courses in History
• Students who demonstrate an interest in Anabaptist studies and who have excellent potential in Anabaptist research

Master of Theological Studies Program

Full-Time Tuition Award

Students in the Grebel/UW Theological Studies program are eligible for a full tuition award for up to six terms of full time study Students in the Grebel/UW Theological Studies program are eligible for a full tuition award for up to six terms of full time study. For the purpose of the MTS program, a full time student is one who registers for three or more courses in Fall and/or Winter Term, or two or more courses in the Spring Term.

Magdalena Coffman Scholarship
The purpose of this scholarship is to support students pursuing graduate studies in the MTS program.

  • Students who are enrolled in the MTS program
  • Demonstrated scholastic ability
  • demonstrated financial need

Clifford Snyder Memorial Bursary
Annual bursaries from the Clifford Snyder Memorial Fund assist students who are continuing their pastoral and leadership training for service in the Mennonite church, relating primarily, but not exclusively, to Latin America.

Jacob H. Janzen Memorial Bursary
Limited funds are available for financial aid, and are applied against tuition fees. Criteria include demonstrated financial need. Special consideration will be given to students working in the areas of Mennonite faith, history or culture, and to students preparing for Christian ministry.

Women of Mennonite Church Eastern Canada Theological Studies Award
The purpose of this award is to provide direct financial support to Mennonite women registered in Graduate Theological Studies at Conrad Grebel University College. Preference will be given to women who are members in an MCEC congregation who show an interest in a church related vocation.

Graduate Student Support Fund
This fund supports students engages in Grebel’s Graduate Theological Studies program who demonstrate scholastic ability and financial need.

Students who have been accepted into the MTS program are encouraged to apply for these awards by completing a Graduate Bursary Application form, available from the MTS Office.

A. James Reimer Award at the Toronto Mennonite Theological Centre
This endowment was established by Alan Armstrong ('94) and Marly Neufeldt ('95). Alan, who was Reimer's student, noted "Jim helped me re-understand biblical texts and church dogma in ways that continue to inspire and strengthen me and my faith."

Nominations for the Reimer TMTC Award will be made by the TMTC Advisory Board and recommended to the Conrad Grebel University College Scholarships and Bursaries Committee. Letters of intent should be forwarded to Jim Pankratz, Director of Graduate Theological Studies. The annual award will be approximately $6,000.

Stephen Family Theological Studies Entrance Award ($1,500)

The Stephen Family Award provides financial support for students enrolled in their first term of graduate Theological Studies at Conrad Grebel University College.

Awards from the proceeds of this Fund will be based on the following criteria:

  • Students who have financial need and qualify for OTSS funding through the Ontario Student Assistance Program.
  • Students enrolled in their first term of graduate Theological Studies at the College.
  • Students in good academic standing.

The Reimer Scholarship in Theological Studies ($5,000 over 2 years)

in recognition of Jim Reimer's contributions as Professor of Theology

The Award will be used to attract talented young scholars to the graduate Theological Studies (TS) program at Conrad Grebel University College.

Recipients will be chosen by the College Scholarships and Bursaries Committee giving preference to the following criteria:

  • A new student beginning full time studeis in the MTS program at Conrad Grebel University College.
  • Students who have demonstrated academic excellence based on previous undergraduate and graduate studies.
  • Priority will be given to students whose primary area of research interest is theology, especially research that relates Mennonite theology to the broader traditions of Christian theology.
  • Priority will be given to students entering the thesis option.
  • Applicants should describe their current theological interests and expertise, and propose areas of study and research for their MTS studies and the future.
